About

In Russian the word butoh sounds like breathing out. Breathing out is followed by breathing in. There is air that live beings breath. The air is invisible. We do not pay attention to it when it exists. But when it disappears even for a short time, at once it becomes clear how necessary it is to us.

There are a lot of simple things and substances to which our attention is not usually drawn to. Also there are «big and important» things, events and ideas to which our consciousness is adhered.

There is creativity. It is invisible like the air, like the inspiration, they are invisible too. As a result of creativity there are diverse forms which bear a name of their founder. We speak: my book, my film, my picture, my performance.

There is a wider attachment to the conception of "mine".
There is a spectator who should be surprised or pleased, who should reject or accept "someone's" form. As a result of an invisible process the spectator is programmed to follow the form in a certain way. The spectator follows the road signed by the instructions, he or she is caught by a hook suspended by the manufacturer of the art object.

The spectator loses possibility simply to breathe; he needs the breathing apparatus in the form of idea or conception, a message or the thought-up form.

We provoke the spectator to look at his own images, to remember his own dreams, to feel his own sensations, to become a co-creator of an event on the stage.

We want the spectator to become an artist, instead of being only the consumer. We have no instructions for use.
